Hip hop hits the office

Commentary from
Marsha Casselman

Fans of Tom Green back in his comedy prime (We’re talking, CHUO Midnight Caller days) may remember his early ’90s hip hop crew Organized Rhyme, known for their videofact hit Check the OR. 250px-Office-landscape-plan

Well, check out the modern-day, white collar OR, Middle Management, a spoof-hop unit from Toronto formed by Keon “KMac” McLaughlin and Brian “BSlow” Slowey (who so happens to rep the Ottawa Valley, just like Green, but let’s compare no further).

BSlow tells us the duo take from CB4, and Office Space, while musically they prefer a mash of Tribe and the Fat Boys.

He also tells us Jay-Z appears in the the video, kind of.

“We put that guy in the beginning of the video to represent Jay-Z ’cause we think he’d dig what we’re doing,” he says.

In a genre saturated with ‘relatively normal’ kids trying to be gangsta (IE. big ups to the mean streets of Greely, ON, without naming any names) it’s rare to find true hip hop artists — ones who make art that comes from the actual shit circumstances of their lives: Mind-numbing office jobs being fair game for many of us.
