Bill plays the Silver Dollar on Friday May 13th

Montreal’s Bloodshot Bill has been traveling as a one-man swagger-heavy rockabilly band for over ten years and just released Thunder and Lightning, an LP of songs about relationships (many of which are stormy, judging from the title). Prized by renowned Toronto booker Dan Burke, Bloodshot plays the Silver Dollar for his album release party tomorrow, Friday May 13. He took the time to answer a few quickies about Montreal girls and being banned from the USA.

You just got back from touring Europe for the billionth time. How is your style of rockabilly appreciated there compared to in Canada?

Pretty much the same…There is an underground scene for this kinda music in almost every town I’ve been to…It keeps growing too.

You mentioned on your blog the girls in Montreal are better than any in Europe. What’s so great about them
?

That’s a misquote, actually I was talking specifically about Sweden, because I’ve always heard about how beautiful the girls are there, so yeah, guess I was looking forward to seeing what that was all about, and uh, wasn’t super impressed…Montreal is filled with hot chicks, so it is tough to beat that…but really, I didn’t mean any harm by that, was just an observation!

What is Thunder and Lightning all about?

All the songs are about relationships….I could feed you some bullshit like some bands do all the time, but really, these are all relationship songs…I DO write about other topics, but just happened these songs were the ones picked for this album.

Your friend and Ding-Dongs collaborator BBQ (Mark Sultan) moved to Toronto. Any chance your will?

No chance…I think Mark hated Montreal for whatever reasons (you’d have to ask him, cause I dunno), but I love it here…Only place I can think of where I’d wanna move is Memphis, TN.

Speaking of Memphis, you must be excited to get back to playing in the US after your five-year ban is up in about 181 days. How have you survived without touring there, and what’s the first place you’ll go when back in the States?

Oooh, I can’t wait! I really miss seeing my friends and eating all the great food…I’ve kept busy with touring elsewhere in the meantime…It’s really silly that I can’t play North America when I am from North America! First place I wanna go is Memphis, first place I will go is New York City.
