Interview ‘bro-down’ with Vilipend

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

“Things are a little safe in heavy music right now,” says Mike Crossley, bassist and vocalist for Toronto’s Vilipend, one of a handful of local hardcore-metal bands influenced by Converge, Botch and Coalesce who are pushing the boundaries of what it means to go to a show. Their deep, seriously hostile metal scene isn’t for weens.
“We’re creating a vibe where you’re not necessarily going to walk into a venue and it’s going to be a bro-down,” says Crossley. We’re trying to paint a picture for someone, or make it a little bit uncomfortable… we want to create an atmosphere that may or may not be happy but… it’s engaging.”

Vilipend play the Soybomb party Nov. 28 with Norris, Kosmograd, Karma Cure at Richmond and Bathurst. Cost: $5
